The Common Loon's review[]

Overall comments[]

These started it all for me when I first became interested in balloons. Uniques are fun, inexpensive balloons that are good for decoration, great for play. The latex is good quality but thin, making these balloons lighter and floatier than other brands. Another plus: these balloons are widely available in supermarkets, drug stores, etc.

Size and shape[]

Unique's 12-inch bulb mold has a wider bulb and sharper neck transition than most 11-inch balloons. This makes a shape that is more spherical than tear-drop, and when the neck comes out it is more bulbous than tapered. The size is great - bigger than Qualatex on first inflation, and neck possibilities (as you can see on the inflation page) are great on first inflation, but you'll have to settle for a bigger bulb and short neck on repeat inflations. Great hysteretic properties - they can get much bigger with repeated inflation; however, they become weaker and softer as a result.

Latex quality[]

Thin compared to decorator brands, but definitely among the strongest of the store brands. The color can be uneven, but it seems to be a dye irregularity most times rather than irregular thickness. These balloons stay relatively soft compared to Qualatex, and remain pliable nearly up to the bursting point. These are good balloons for beginner blow to pop.

Reliability[]

Not the non-popper's best friend. Frequent small bubbles in the midsection; also, mysterious granules and thickening, and church windows especially near the drip point. The latex is soft and thin compared to decorator brands, so these balloons probably can't take very rough handling. But their track record is pretty good, especially if you're not pushing the limits of re-inflation.
